Don Giovanni is the second of Mozart’s landmark collaborations with librettist Lorenzo da Ponte (after The Marriage of Figaro and before Così fan tutte). In it they created a work that has beguiled and entranced in equal measure since its premiere in 1787. Perfectly situated, as no other opera, between tragedy and comedy, this potent drama combines glorious music with a seductive central character who is endlessly fascinating in his complexity.

Uruguayan bass-baritone Erwin Schrott made his Royal Opera debut in 2003 as Leporello (Don Giovanni) and has since returned to The Royal Opera to sing Banquo (Macbeth), Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro), Don Giovanni and Jean Procida (Les Vêpres siciliennes). He returns in the 2017/18 Season to sing Jean Procida.

Schrott was introduced to opera by music-loving parents. He began his career in Montevideo and at the Teatro Municipal in Santiago, Chile, and in 1998 won Operalia. He has since sung major roles with leading opera houses around the world. Engagements include Don Giovanni for La Scala, Milan, the Metropolitan Opera, New York, Arena di Verona, Bavarian State Opera and Vienna State Opera and Figaro (Le nozze di Figaro) for the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Paris Opéra, in Valencia, Los Angeles and Buenos Aires and for the Salzburg Festival. Other roles with which he is particularly associated include Escamillo (Carmen), Méphistophélès (Faust), Dulcamara (L’elisir d’amore) and Leporello.

Schrott is an exclusive recording artist with Sony, for which his many recordings include Rojotango, a disc of Latin American songs.
